Navigating Change: Supporting Your Mind and Body as Summer Winds Down

As August comes to a close, there’s a shift we can all feel. The days are still warm, but the evenings cool down faster, and suddenly it’s clear—summer won’t last forever. That shift often carries more than just a change in weather. It can stir up old memories of going back to school, the scramble of getting kids ready for September routines, or—for those in the corporate world—the reality check that Q4 is right around the corner.

For some, this season feels energizing, like a fresh start. For others, it can bring a mix of stress, nostalgia, or even anxiety. And often, it’s a little bit of both.

Why This Time of Year Can Feel Heavy

  • Nostalgia: Seasonal markers can bring us back to earlier chapters—backpacks, classrooms, first jobs, or even past transitions that felt tough.

  • Routines Shifting: After summer’s slower pace, September tends to kick things into high gear—that sudden change can feel overwhelming.

  • Pressure: Whether it’s helping kids adjust or meeting year-end targets, this time of year often comes with higher expectations and less breathing room.

Simple Ways to Ground Yourself

You don’t have to overhaul your life to feel more balanced heading into fall. A few small practices can make a real difference:

  • Take a pause outside: Notice the cooler breeze, the different light, the subtle changes around you—let your body register the shift.

  • Do a quick check-In: Ask yourself: What did this summer give me? What do I want to bring with me into the fall? What can I let go of?

  • Adjust one routine: Instead of trying to reset everything at once, pick one area—bedtime, hydration, or movement—and ease into change.

  • Breathe it out: Try the 4-7-8 breath (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) when stress or anxiety builds—it’s simple and calming.

  • Practice Kindness (for yourself): Change is rarely seamless—give yourself room to feel what you’re feeling without judgment.

Moving Into Fall with Intention

Seasons shifting are a reminder that we’re shifting too. While this time of year can feel heavy, it’s also a chance to pause, reflect, and reset in small but meaningful ways.

And if you find yourself needing a little extra support as you navigate the transition, I’d be glad to help. At Bright, we offer complimentary 15-minute meet and greets so you can explore if therapy might feel like a good fit for you.
