Supporting the Journey to Parenthood: Why Male Fertility Matters
Note on terminology: In this article, the terms male and female are used to refer to reproductive anatomy relevant to fertility. Male refers to individuals with sperm-producing reproductive anatomy, and female refers to individuals with ovaries and a uterus.
Where Acupuncture Fits Into the Male Fertility Journey
Acupuncture has numerous benefits, especially when it comes to the world of fertility. We often highlight acupuncture for females – whether it is for cycle regularity, painful menstruation or fertility optimization; however, too often we miss the opportunity to highlight acupuncture as an extremely beneficial tool for male hormonal health and fertility. With male-factor infertility contributing to 40-50% of infertility cases, this is an important part of the story.
Research shows that acupuncture can support male fertility in numerous ways. Studies have demonstrated that consistent acupuncture can increase the percentage and number of motile sperm as well as improve overall sperm morphology. Additional research has also shown a potential link between acupuncture and reduced sperm DNA fragmentation, an important factor in reproductive health. Beyond its effects on sperm quality, acupuncture may help regulate hormonal activity and support the healthy functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, a key system involved in male reproductive health.
These benefits are thought to occur through several interconnected mechanisms. Acupuncture has been shown to promote circulation and encourage vasodilation, helping to improve the delivery of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. When applied to the pelvic region, acupuncture may help support healthy blood flow to the reproductive organs, including the testes. Acupuncture also helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system—often referred to as the body's "rest and digest" state—which can help reduce stress and lower cortisol levels, factors that are known to inhibit testosterone. In addition, research suggests that acupuncture may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, two factors that can negatively affect sperm health and fertility outcomes.
What to Expect from Treatment
At Bright, we strive to make every acupuncture session a comfortable and relaxing experience. Appointments are typically 45 minutes long and begin with a conversation about your health history, fertility goals, and any concerns you'd like to discuss. We also take time to review informed consent and answer any questions you may have before treatment begins.
Your practitioner will create a personalized treatment plan and select acupuncture points based on your individual needs and intake assessment. Once the needles are in place, you'll have the opportunity to rest and relax for approximately 20–30 minutes, allowing your body time to receive its therapeutic benefits.
While many people notice benefits after their first few sessions, acupuncture is most effective when incorporated into a consistent treatment plan. Regular sessions can help support your fertility goals and overall well-being over time.
